Writer Scoops Cork Award

The Irish Examiner reports at a British writer Simon Van Booy has won the Frank O’Connor Short Story Award for his collection, Love Begins in Winter. The €35,000 prize is the richest in the world for a short story collection.

2009 Giller Prize Longlist

The 2009 Scotiabank Giller Prize jury today announced its longlist of books in the running for this year’s prize. The jury selected 12 titles out of 96 books, submitted by 39 publishers from every region of Canada.

Celebrated American novelist and short story writer Russell Banks, acclaimed UK author and journalist Victoria Glendinning, and distinguished Canadian writer and professor, Alistair MacLeod made up the 2009 jury. Two thousand and nine marks the sixteenth year of the prize.

From a highly competitive field, the Scotiabank Giller jury has selected the following titles for this year’s longlist:

1. Margaret Atwood for her novel The Year Of The Flood
2. Martha Bailie for her novel The Incident Report
3. Kim Echlin for her novel The Disappeare
4. Claire Holden Rothman for her novel The Heart Specialist

Jean Valentine and Harryette Mullen Receive Major Poetry Awards

Jean Valentine has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets. The $100,000 prize recognizes outstanding and proven mastery in the art of poetry. Harryette Mullen has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Academy Fellowship. The Fellowship is awarded to a poet for distinguished poetic achievement and provides a stipend of $25,000. The Academy’s Board of Chancellors, a body of sixteen eminent poets, selects the Wallace Stevens Award and Academy Fellowship recipients.
